Together we will examine and discuss such concepts as diary as literature, diary as biography, diary as creative expression, diary as coping mechanism, diaries and sketchbooks as art artifacts, and diary as historical document.

Whose diaries do we want to read and why? Are all diaries interesting? Why does there seem to have been a switch from “you can’t just publish your diary” to an onslaught of diaristic memoirs flooding the market?

By looking at a variety of approaches from a long list of stellar diarists, we will then tackle some in-the-moment journaling/free-writing and a few different editing techniques. What can we make in this moment?

*Cynthia Nelson is a writer, songwriter, and lifelong diarist interested in the daily words that may morph into the groovy artworks.
